Editing Customer, Node, & Pipe Data

This article covers the eleven commands used to view and change the data behind customer, node, and pipe features — one feature at a time, in bulk, or by selecting a pipe to reach its attached customers. It also covers editing individual polyline pipe vertices and the two calculated node/pipe values (External Load and Customer Count) that can be overridden directly. Editing a node’s External Load values or a pipe’s Customer Count bypasses GASWorkS’s automatic load accounting — only use those commands when you know the calculated value is wrong.

Edit Customer Data

Displays and lets you change the data values for a single customer feature.

  1. With a model open, the GDI Window displayed, and at least one customer in the model, select Edit Customer from the Customer branch of the GDI Command Tree.
  2. At the Select Customer prompt, left-click the customer. It is highlighted.
  3. The Customer Data & Results are displayed in the Data Panel. Scroll through the sections; left-click a white cell to type or select a new value, or left-click an orange (Actions) cell to run its associated command.
  4. Click Apply Data Values to save changes, or Dismiss if you made none.

Also runs from the GDI Command List, or by typing EDITCUSTOMER or EDITCUST. You can also left-click a customer symbol directly in the GDI Display when no other command is running, or open it from the Customer Data Report (Report menu > Customer Data).

Notes

  • Cells with a yellow background in the Data Panel can’t be edited there; they contain calculated values or are controlled by another command.
  • The Symbol Color field can be set to “Default” (the Customer Symbols value on the Default Colors tab of Color Display Settings) or “Selected Color” (a unique color for that customer); Symbol Style and Size default from the Graphics tab of Options & Settings unless overridden.
  • Attribute Data fields are populated by linking an attribute database from the Customer Data Attribute File Settings screen (Utilities menu > Customer Data > Attribute File); depending on the connection type, not all Attribute Data values may be editable here.

Edit Customer Data By Pipe Selection

Displays the data values for the customer feature(s) assigned to a selected pipe.

  1. Select Edit Customer Data By Pipe Selection from the GDI Command List.
  2. At the Select A Pipe prompt, left-click a pipe with at least one attached customer.
  3. If more than one customer is attached, the Multiple Customers Found screen lists their Record/ID and Link ID Numbers — double-click the one you want.
  4. The Customer Data & Results are displayed in the Data Panel; edit white cells and click Apply Data Values, or Dismiss if no changes were made.
  5. Make another selection from the Multiple Customers Found screen if needed, then click Close.

Runs by typing EDITCUSTBYPIPE on the GDI Command Line.

Notes

  • The Data Panel behaves the same here as in Edit Customer Data — yellow cells can’t be edited, and Symbol Color/Style and Attribute Data fields follow the same defaults and linking rules.

Edit Multiple Customers

Applies the same data change to a selected group of customer features at once.

  1. Select Edit Multiple Customers from the Customer branch of the GDI Command Tree.
  2. If this command was run before, respond Yes to reuse the last customer selection, No to make a new selection, or Cancel to end the command.
  3. At the Select First Feature and Select Another Feature prompts, left-click each customer to include. Right-click when finished.
  4. On the Multiple Edit Specifications screen, either: pick a Set item and Equal To value on the Model Data Items tab; pick a command on the Commands tab; or pick a Set item and Equal To value on the Attribute Data Items tab.
  5. Click Apply. A message may report the number of records updated.
  6. Make further changes as needed, then click Close & Solve to exit and solve the model, or Close to exit without solving.

Also runs from the GDI Command List, or by typing EDITMULTICUST. The Mass Update Routine offers another way to edit multiple customers at once.

Notes

  • Only customers falling completely within the selection window or polygon are included; clicking an already-highlighted customer removes it from the selection.
  • No changes take effect on the Multiple Edit Specifications screen until Apply is clicked; closing without applying prompts a confirmation before discarding them.

Edit Multiple Nodes

Applies the same data change to a selected group of nodes at once.

  1. Select Edit Multiple Nodes from the Edit Data branch of the GDI Command Tree.
  2. If this command was run before, respond Yes to reuse the last selection, No to make a new selection, or Cancel to end the command.
  3. At the Select First Feature and Select Another Feature prompts, left-click each node to include. Right-click when finished.
  4. On the Multiple Edit Specifications screen, set values on the Model Data Items, Commands, or Attribute Data Items tab as needed.
  5. Click Apply. A message may report the number of records updated.
  6. Make further changes as needed, then click Close & Solve or Close.

Edit A Node’s External Load

Directly changes the calculated External Load value for a selected node.

  1. Select Edit Node External Load from the GDI Command List.
  2. At the Select A Node prompt, left-click the node. It is highlighted.
  3. At the New External Load Value prompt, type a value in the Node Data Load Units and press Enter.

Runs by typing EDITNODELOAD. Use Edit A Node’s Fixed External Load to set the separate Fixed value instead.

Notes

  • The External Load is the sum of assigned customer loads for customers whose Adjust Load option is set to “Yes,” and the model Design Factor can adjust this value.

Edit A Node’s Fixed External Load

Directly changes the calculated Fixed External Load value for a selected node.

  1. Select Edit Node External Load (Fixed) from the GDI Command List.
  2. At the Select A Node prompt, left-click the node. It is highlighted.
  3. At the New External Load (Fixed) Value prompt, type a value in the Node Data Load Units and press Enter.

Runs by typing EDITNODELOADFIX. Use Edit A Node’s External Load to set the non-fixed value instead.

Notes

  • The External Load (Fixed) is the sum of assigned customer loads for customers whose Adjust Load option is set to “No,” and is not subject to the model Design Factor.

Edit A Pipe’s Customer Count

Directly changes the Customer Count value for a selected pipe feature.

  1. Select Edit Pipe Customer Count from the GDI Command List.
  2. At the Select A Pipe prompt, left-click the pipe. It is highlighted.
  3. At the New Customer Count prompt, type a value and press Enter.

Runs by typing EDITPIPECOUNT.

Notes

  • Customer Count records the number of customers attached to a pipe, and GASWorkS normally updates it automatically as customers are added or deleted.

Edit Pipe Data

Displays and lets you change the data values for a single pipe feature.

  1. Select Edit Pipe from the Edit Data branch of the GDI Command Tree.
  2. At the Select A Pipe prompt, left-click the pipe. It is highlighted.
  3. The Pipe Data & Results are displayed in the Data Panel. Left-click a white cell to change its value, or an orange (Actions) cell to run its command.
  4. Click Apply Data Values to save changes, or Dismiss if you made none.

Also runs from the GDI Command List, or by typing EDITPIPE. You can also left-click a pipe line directly in the GDI Display when no other command is running, or open it from the Pipe Data Report (Report menu > Pipe Data).

Notes

Edit A Polyline Pipe Vertex

Displays and lets you change the data values for a single polyline pipe vertex.

  1. Select Edit Polyline Pipe Vertex from the GDI Command List.
  2. At the Select A Polyline Pipe Vertex prompt, left-click a vertex. If Display Vertex Symbols is on, the vertex is highlighted.
  3. The Vertex Data is displayed in the Data Panel. Left-click a white cell to type a new value, or an orange (Actions) cell to run its command.
  4. Click Apply Data Values to save changes, or Dismiss if you made none.

Runs by typing EDITPOLYVERTEX or EDITPVTX.

Notes

  • Cells with a yellow background in the Data Panel can’t be edited there; they contain calculated values or are controlled by another command.
  • This command only supports editing vertex data, not location; to move a vertex and redraw the adjacent pipe segments, use Move A Polyline Pipe Vertex or its grips instead.

Notes & Considerations

  • If Allow Undo Of Data/Graphic Changes is enabled (Utilities > Options & Settings > Environment), click the Undo icon to reverse the last data or graphic change.

FAQ

  • Why would I convert an arc pipe to a polyline pipe?

    Some GASWorkS editing tools can’t be used on arc-type pipes. Converting to a polyline pipe unlocks those commands while keeping the original shape — GASWorkS places a vertex at each degree of curvature along the arc and connects them with straight segments.

  • What’s the difference between converting one arc pipe and converting all of them?
    Convert An Arc Pipe To A Polyline Pipe lets you pick a single arc pipe to convert. Convert All Arc Pipes To Polyline Pipes runs the same conversion across every arc-type pipe in the model in one pass, and reports how many pipes were updated.
  • What kinds of background entities can be converted into a pipe feature?
    Only Arc, Line, and Polyline type entities — from either a DXF or a shapefile (SHP) background image. Other entity types in the background image can’t be converted directly to a pipe.
  • Do I need anything set up before I can convert DXF service lines to customers?
    Yes — the Facility Type you’re converting to must be set to “Active.” You can check or change that under Facility Settings in the Edit menu. You’ll also need a DXF background image with the service lines already attached.
  • What happens to the Color Legend when I convert it to User Text?
    It becomes a group of individual User Text features that you can manipulate with the standard User Text and Group commands, rather than the fixed Color Legend format. If a Color Legend Text already exists, you’ll be asked whether to delete it, keep it alongside the new one, or cancel.
  • I converted several DXF lines to pipes — why did it also ask me about node data?
    Converting a line can create new nodes at its endpoints. If the Prompt For Data During New Feature Entry option is turned on, GASWorkS shows the Node Data (and Pipe Data) for each new feature in the Data Panel so you can review or adjust the defaults before moving on.
