Matching Pipe, Graphic & Text Properties

The Match commands copy property values from one “base” feature to one or more other features of the same type, letting you standardize data across the model without editing each feature individually. This article covers the seven matching commands for pipes, User Graphic Lines, User Graphic Symbols, and User Text: Match Pipe Facility, Match Pipe Graphic Properties, Match Pipe Hydraulic Properties, Match Pipe Properties (All), Match User Graphic Line Properties, Match User Graphic Symbol Properties, and Match User Text Properties. All seven follow the same select-a-base-then-select-targets workflow. There is no unselecting of features during a Match command — if you select the wrong feature, cancel the command to preserve the model without changing model data.

GDI Commands

Match The Pipe Facility

Assigns the Facility Type value from one pipe feature to one or more other pipe type features.

  1. Select the Match Pipe Facility item from the GDI Command List.
  2. At the Select Base Pipe prompt, left-click the pipe whose Facility Type will be copied. The selected pipe will be highlighted.
  3. At the Select Pipe To Change prompt, left-click another pipe. The selected pipe will be highlighted.
  4. The Select Pipe To Change prompt remains displayed — continue left-clicking to select additional pipes. When finished, right-click the mouse.
  5. The Facility Type of all selected pipes will equal the Facility Type of the base pipe.

This command can be executed by selecting the Match Pipe Facility item from the GDI Command List or by typing MATCHPIPEFACILITY or MATCHPFAC on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.

Notes

  • The settings for each Facility Type can be viewed or edited on the Facility Settings screen. To access the screen, select the Facility Settings item from the Edit menu.

Match The Pipe Graphic Properties

Assigns the graphic data items from one pipe feature to one or more other pipe features.

  1. Select the Match Pipe Graphic Properties item from the GDI Command List.
  2. At the Select Base Pipe prompt, left-click the pipe whose graphic properties will be copied. The selected pipe will be highlighted.
  3. At the Select Pipe To Change prompt, left-click another pipe. The selected pipe will be highlighted.
  4. The Select Pipe To Change prompt remains displayed — continue left-clicking to select additional pipes. When finished, right-click the mouse.
  5. The graphic data of all selected pipes will be set equal to the graphic data of the base pipe.

This command can be executed by selecting the Match Pipe Graphic Properties item from the GDI Command List or by typing MATCHPIPEGRAPHIC or MATCHPG on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.

Match The Pipe Hydraulic Properties

Assigns the hydraulic data items from one pipe feature to one or more other pipe features.

  1. Select the Match Pipe Hydraulic Properties item from the GDI Command List.
  2. At the Select Base Pipe prompt, left-click the pipe whose hydraulic properties will be copied. The selected pipe will be highlighted.
  3. At the Select Pipe To Change prompt, left-click another pipe. The selected pipe will be highlighted.
  4. The Select Pipe To Change prompt remains displayed — continue left-clicking to select additional pipes. When finished, right-click the mouse.
  5. The hydraulic data of all the selected pipes will be set equal to the hydraulic data of the base pipe.

This command can be executed by selecting the Match Pipe Hydraulic Properties item from the GDI Command List or by typing MATCHPIPEHYDRAULIC or MATCHPHYD on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.

Match All Of The Pipe Properties

Assigns the graphic and hydraulic data items from one pipe feature to one or more other pipe features.

  1. Select the Match Pipe Properties (All) item from the GDI Command List.
  2. At the Select Base Pipe prompt, left-click the pipe whose graphic and hydraulic properties will be copied. The selected pipe will be highlighted.
  3. At the Select Pipe To Change prompt, left-click another pipe. The selected pipe will be highlighted.
  4. The Select Pipe To Change prompt remains displayed — continue left-clicking to select additional pipes. When finished, right-click the mouse.
  5. The graphic and hydraulic data of all the selected pipes will be set equal to the graphic and hydraulic data of the base pipe.

This command can be executed by selecting the Match Pipe Properties (All) item from the GDI Command List or by typing MATCHPIPEPROP or MATCHP on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.

Match The User Graphic Line Properties

Assigns the graphic data items from one User Graphic Line to one or more other User Graphic Lines.

  1. Select the Match User Graphic Line Properties item from the GDI Command List.
  2. At the Select Base User Graphic Line prompt, left-click the User Graphic Line whose graphic properties will be copied. The selected line will be highlighted.
  3. At the Select User Graphic Line To Change prompt, left-click another User Graphic Line. The selected line will be highlighted.
  4. The Select User Graphic Line To Change prompt remains displayed — continue left-clicking to select additional lines. When finished, right-click the mouse.
  5. The graphic data of all selected lines will be set equal to the graphic data of the base line.

This command can be executed by selecting the Match User Graphic Line Properties item from the GDI Command List or by typing MATCHLINEPROP or MATCHL on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.

Notes

  • To change the base line’s data before using this command, use the Edit User Graphic Line command or left-click the desired User Graphic Line to display the data in the Data Panel.

Match The User Graphic Symbol Properties

Assigns the graphic data items from one User Graphic Symbol to one or more other User Graphic Symbols.

  1. Select the Match User Graphic Symbol Properties item from the GDI Command List.
  2. At the Select Base User Graphic Symbol prompt, left-click the User Graphic Symbol whose graphic properties will be copied. The selected symbol will be highlighted.
  3. At the Select User Graphic Symbol To Change prompt, left-click another User Graphic Symbol. The selected symbol will be highlighted.
  4. The Select User Graphic Symbol To Change prompt remains displayed — continue left-clicking to select additional symbols. When finished, right-click the mouse.
  5. The graphic data of all selected symbols will be set equal to the graphic data of the base symbol.

This command can be executed by selecting the Match User Graphic Symbol Properties item from the GDI Command List or by typing MATCHSYMBOLPROP or MATCHS on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.

Notes

  • To change the base symbol’s data before using this command, use the Edit User Graphic Symbol command or left-click the desired User Graphic Symbol to display the data in the Data Panel.

Match The User Text Properties

Assigns the graphic data items from one User Text feature to one or more other User Text features.

  1. Select the Match User Text Properties item from the GDI Command List.
  2. At the Select Base User Text prompt, left-click the User Text feature whose graphic properties will be copied. The selected text will be highlighted.
  3. At the Select User Text To Change prompt, left-click another User Text feature. The selected text will be highlighted.
  4. The Select User Text To Change prompt remains displayed — continue left-clicking to select additional text features. When finished, right-click the mouse.
  5. The graphic data of all selected text features will be set equal to the graphic data of the base text feature.

This command can be executed by selecting the Match User Text Properties item from the GDI Command List or by typing MATCHTEXT or MATCHT on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.

Notes

  • To change the base text’s data before using this command, use the Edit User Text command or left-click the desired User Text feature to display the data in the Data Panel.

Notes & Considerations

  • There is no unselecting of features during a Match command. Cancel the command to preserve the model without changing model data.
  • To change the data of an individual pipe feature, use the Edit Pipe Data command or left-click the desired pipe feature to display the data in the Data Panel.
  • If the Allow Undo Of Data/Graphic Changes environment option is selected, click the Undo icon to restore the last data or graphic change. To access the option, select the Options & Settings item from the Utilities menu, then select the Environment data tab.

FAQ

  • Why would I convert an arc pipe to a polyline pipe?

    Some GASWorkS editing tools can’t be used on arc-type pipes. Converting to a polyline pipe unlocks those commands while keeping the original shape — GASWorkS places a vertex at each degree of curvature along the arc and connects them with straight segments.

  • What’s the difference between converting one arc pipe and converting all of them?
    Convert An Arc Pipe To A Polyline Pipe lets you pick a single arc pipe to convert. Convert All Arc Pipes To Polyline Pipes runs the same conversion across every arc-type pipe in the model in one pass, and reports how many pipes were updated.
  • What kinds of background entities can be converted into a pipe feature?
    Only Arc, Line, and Polyline type entities — from either a DXF or a shapefile (SHP) background image. Other entity types in the background image can’t be converted directly to a pipe.
  • Do I need anything set up before I can convert DXF service lines to customers?
    Yes — the Facility Type you’re converting to must be set to “Active.” You can check or change that under Facility Settings in the Edit menu. You’ll also need a DXF background image with the service lines already attached.
  • What happens to the Color Legend when I convert it to User Text?
    It becomes a group of individual User Text features that you can manipulate with the standard User Text and Group commands, rather than the fixed Color Legend format. If a Color Legend Text already exists, you’ll be asked whether to delete it, keep it alongside the new one, or cancel.
  • I converted several DXF lines to pipes — why did it also ask me about node data?
    Converting a line can create new nodes at its endpoints. If the Prompt For Data During New Feature Entry option is turned on, GASWorkS shows the Node Data (and Pipe Data) for each new feature in the Data Panel so you can review or adjust the defaults before moving on.
