GASWorkS provides a family of GDI commands for repositioning the physical features of a model — customers, nodes, and pipes — along with their supporting elements such as service taps, service line vertices, and polyline pipe vertices. This article covers the Move Branch Service Tap, Move Customer, Move Customer – Reassign Main, Move Node, Move Pipe, Move Pipe End, Move Polyline Pipe Vertex, Move Service Line Vertex, and Move Service Tap commands. Each example assumes that GASWorkS has been started, a model is open, and the GDI Window is displayed. Moving a node, pipe end, or pipe vertex can change the graphic length of connected pipes — review the Automatically Update Pipe Length graphics option so the Hydraulic Length values are handled the way you intend.
GDI Commands
Move A Branch Service Tap
Moves the service tap location associated with a branch customer feature from one trunk customer feature to another.
- Select the Move Branch Service Tap item from the GDI Command List.
- At the Select Customer To Move Branch Tap For prompt, left-click a branch customer. The selected customer will be highlighted. If the selected customer is not a branch customer, a message may be displayed — click the OK command button to return to the prompt.
- At the Select Customer To Move Branch To prompt, left-click a trunk customer. The selected customer will be highlighted. If the selected customer is a branch customer or a trunk customer that already has a branch customer, a message may be displayed — click the OK command button to return to the prompt.
- At the Select New Tap Location prompt, move the mouse crosshairs to a point on the trunk service line and left-click.
- The branch customer tap will be placed at the selected location.

This command can be executed by selecting the Move Branch Service Tap item from the GDI Command List or by typing MOVEBRANCHTAP or MOVEBRANCH on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.
Notes
- A trunk customer service runs from the customer location to a tap location on a supply main; a branch customer service taps off of a trunk service rather than a main. Branch customers are assigned to the supply main of their trunk customer, and each trunk customer can only have one branch customer.
- This command requires an existing service to tap from. To create a branch and a trunk customer from two existing customers, use the Create Branch Customer Tap command.
Move A Customer
Moves a customer feature to a new location, with the option to move its service tap as well.
- Select the Move Customer item from the Customer branch of the GDI Command Tree.
- At the Select Customer To Move prompt, left-click a customer. The selected customer will be highlighted.
- At the New Location prompt, move the mouse crosshairs to a point in the GDI Display and left-click.
- A message will be displayed asking whether to move the tap location. Click the Yes command button to move the tap to the pipe closest to the customer location, or the No command button to keep the existing tap location.
- The selected customer will be moved to the selected location.

This command can be executed by selecting the Move Customer item from the GDI Command Tree/List or by typing MOVECUSTOMER or MOVEC on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.
Notes
- To change the location of the service tap along a supply main, use the Move Service Tap command or grips.
- To move a customer and select its new supply main, use the Move Customer – Reassign Main command.
Move A Customer & Reassign The Supply Main
Moves a customer feature and reassigns it to a new supply main.
- Select the Move Customer – Reassign Main item from the GDI Command List.
- At the Select Customer To Move prompt, left-click a customer. The selected customer will be highlighted.
- At the New Location prompt, move the mouse crosshairs to a point in the GDI Display and left-click. The selected customer will be moved to the selected location.
- At the Select New Supply Main prompt, left-click a pipe.
- A tap will be placed at the point on the selected pipe closest to the customer location, and a service line will be drawn between the customer location and the tap location.

This command can be executed by selecting the Move Customer – Reassign Main item from the GDI Command List or by typing MOVECUSTREASSIGN on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.
Notes
- To change the location of the service tap along a supply main, use the Move Service Tap command or grips.
- To change a customer’s location without reassigning its supply main, use the Move Customer command or grips.
Move A Node
Moves a node and its connected pipe features.
- Select the Move Node item from the Edit Graphics branch of the GDI Command Tree.
- At the Select Node To Move prompt, left-click a node. The selected node will be highlighted.
- At the New Location prompt, move the mouse crosshairs to a point in the GDI Display and left-click.
- If the Automatically Update Pipe Length graphics option is selected, the Hydraulic Length values of any connected pipes will be recalculated. If not, a message will be displayed asking whether to update the Hydraulic Length — click the Yes command button to update the lengths or the No command button to preserve the original values.
- The selected node and connected pipes will be redrawn to the newly selected location.

This command can be executed by selecting the Move Node item from the GDI Command Tree/List or by typing MOVENODE or MOVEN on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.
Notes
- To move the end of one pipe without moving an existing node that is connected to other pipes, use the Move Pipe End command.
Move A Pipe
Moves an entire pipe feature relative to a selected base node.
- Select the Move Pipe item from the GDI Command List.
- At the Select Pipe To Move prompt, left-click a pipe. The selected pipe will be highlighted.
- At the Select A Base Node prompt, left-click a node. The selected node will be highlighted.
- At the New Location prompt, move the mouse crosshairs to a point in the GDI Display and left-click.
- The pipe will be redrawn relative to the newly selected node location.

This command can be executed by selecting the Move Pipe item from the GDI Command List or by typing MOVEPIPE or MOVEP on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.
Notes
- Connected nodes will only be moved if connected to the pipe being moved. Common nodes connected to at least one other pipe will not be moved. If an existing node is selected as the new node location, the pipe will be connected to it; otherwise, a new node will be created at the pipe end, with data taken from the previously connected node. Any nodes that are no longer connected to a pipe when this routine completes will be deleted.
- Customers will be moved with the pipes they are assigned to. Customer and tap locations will remain in the same position relative to the moved pipe.
- To change the location of one end of a pipe, use the Move Pipe End command or grips.
Move A Pipe End
Moves the end of a pipe feature from one node to another.
- Select the Move Pipe End item from the Edit Graphics branch of the GDI Command Tree.
- At the Select Pipe To Move End For prompt, left-click a pipe. The selected pipe will be highlighted.
- At the Select Pipe End (Node) To Move prompt, left-click one of the two nodes on the highlighted pipe.
- At the New Location prompt, move the mouse crosshairs to a point in the GDI Display and left-click. The node will be moved to the selected location. If a new node is created and the Prompt For Data During New Feature Entry environment option is selected, the Node Data will be displayed in the Data Panel — right-click the mouse to accept the default data values, or click the Apply Data Values command button if changes are made.
- If the Automatically Update Pipe Length graphics option is selected, the Hydraulic Length of the pipe will be recalculated. If not, a message will be displayed asking whether to update the Hydraulic Length — click the Yes command button to update the length or the No command button to preserve the original value.
- The pipe will be redrawn to the newly selected node location.

This command can be executed by selecting the Move Pipe End item from the GDI Command Tree/List or by typing MOVEPIPEEND or MOVEPEND on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.
Notes
- Any nodes no longer connected to a pipe when this routine is complete will be deleted.
- Customer locations are not changed by this command. Tap locations will be moved to the point on the pipe closest to their associated customer location.
- To move a node and all pipe ends connected to that node, use the Move Node command.
- To move an entire pipe without changing its length or direction, use the Move Pipe command.
Move A Polyline Pipe Vertex
Moves a vertex for a polyline pipe feature.
- Select the Move Polyline Pipe Vertex item from the GDI Command List.
- At the Select Polyline Pipe Vertex To Move prompt, left-click a polyline pipe vertex.
- At the New Vertex Location prompt, move the mouse crosshairs to a point in the GDI Display and left-click.
- If the Automatically Update Pipe Length graphics option is selected, the Hydraulic Length of the pipe will be recalculated. If not, a message will be displayed asking whether to update the Hydraulic Length — click the Yes command button to update the length or the No command button to preserve the original value.
- The vertex and the adjacent pipe segments will be moved to the selected location.

This command can be executed by selecting the Move Polyline Pipe Vertex item from the GDI Command List or by typing MOVEPOLYVERTEX or MOVEPVTX on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.

- To display the Vertex Data in the Data Panel, use the Edit Polyline Pipe Vertex command or left-click the desired vertex.
Move A Service Line Vertex
Moves a vertex for a polyline-type customer service.
- Select the Move Service Line Vertex item from the GDI Command List.
- At the Select Customer To Move Service Line Vertex For prompt, left-click a polyline service customer. The selected customer will be highlighted.
- At the Select A Vertex prompt, left-click a polyline service vertex.
- At the New Vertex Location prompt, move the mouse crosshairs to a point in the GDI Display and left-click.
- The vertex and the adjacent service line segments will be moved to the selected location.

This command can be executed by selecting the Move Service Line Vertex item from the GDI Command List or by typing MOVESERVICEVERTEX or MOVESVTX on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.

- To display the Vertex Data in the Data Panel, left-click on the desired vertex.
Move A Service Tap
Moves a customer service line tap location along the supply main.
- Select the Move Service Tap item from the GDI Command List.
- At the Select Customer To Move Service Tap For prompt, left-click a customer. The selected customer will be highlighted.
- At the New Tap Location prompt, move the mouse crosshairs to a point on the selected customer’s supply main and left-click.
- The service tap will be moved to the selected location, and the service line segment will be redrawn from the new tap location to the next point along the service line.

This command can be executed by selecting the Move Service Tap item from the GDI Command List or by typing MOVESERVICETAP or MOVESTAP on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.
Notes
- To move a customer’s service tap to a different main, use the Reassign Customer Supply Main command.
- If the selected service is a polyline, only the segment between the service tap and the first vertex will be moved. To move the other segments of a polyline service, use the Move Service Line Vertex command.
- If the selected service is a branch, the service will be converted into a trunk and connected to a supply main. To move a branch service tap to a different trunk service, use the Move Branch Service Tap command.
Notes & Considerations
- Grips offer another method for moving graphic features.
- When a move changes a pipe’s graphic geometry (Move Node, Move Pipe End, Move Polyline Pipe Vertex), the Hydraulic Length is recalculated automatically if the Automatically Update Pipe Length graphics option is selected; otherwise a message will ask whether to update the value.
- The Hydraulic Length is the value used for the pipe length in the GASWorkS calculations. The initial Hydraulic Length value equals the graphic length on the GDI Display. The Hydraulic Length value can be changed in the Pipe Data in the Data Panel or by the Edit Pipe Data command.
- The Display Vertex Symbols graphics option can be turned “on” to make polyline vertices easier to see. To access the option, select the Options & Settings item from the Utilities menu, then select the Graphics data tab.
- If the Allow Undo Of Data/Graphic Changes environment option is selected, click the Undo icon to restore the last data or graphic change. To access the option, select the Options & Settings item from the Utilities menu, then select the Environment data tab.

Why would I convert an arc pipe to a polyline pipe?
Some GASWorkS editing tools can’t be used on arc-type pipes. Converting to a polyline pipe unlocks those commands while keeping the original shape — GASWorkS places a vertex at each degree of curvature along the arc and connects them with straight segments.

What’s the difference between converting one arc pipe and converting all of them?Convert An Arc Pipe To A Polyline Pipe lets you pick a single arc pipe to convert. Convert All Arc Pipes To Polyline Pipes runs the same conversion across every arc-type pipe in the model in one pass, and reports how many pipes were updated.

What kinds of background entities can be converted into a pipe feature?Only Arc, Line, and Polyline type entities — from either a DXF or a shapefile (SHP) background image. Other entity types in the background image can’t be converted directly to a pipe.

Do I need anything set up before I can convert DXF service lines to customers?Yes — the Facility Type you’re converting to must be set to “Active.” You can check or change that under Facility Settings in the Edit menu. You’ll also need a DXF background image with the service lines already attached.

What happens to the Color Legend when I convert it to User Text?It becomes a group of individual User Text features that you can manipulate with the standard User Text and Group commands, rather than the fixed Color Legend format. If a Color Legend Text already exists, you’ll be asked whether to delete it, keep it alongside the new one, or cancel.

I converted several DXF lines to pipes — why did it also ask me about node data?Converting a line can create new nodes at its endpoints. If the Prompt For Data During New Feature Entry option is turned on, GASWorkS shows the Node Data (and Pipe Data) for each new feature in the Data Panel so you can review or adjust the defaults before moving on.
