These three commands build supporting structure into a model: tapping a branch customer off of a trunk service, and adding a symbol legend or a user table to the drawing for reference or reporting. Check the default dimensional units on the Options & Settings screen before creating a legend or table, since table width, text height, and symbol size are all entered in those units.
Create A Branch Customer Tap
Creates a branch and trunk style customer feature from two existing customer features.
- Select the Create Branch Customer Tap item from the GDI Command List.
- At the Select Customer To Create Branch Tap For prompt, left-click the customer that will become the branch customer. It is highlighted.
- At the Select Customer To Branch From prompt, left-click the trunk customer to branch from. It is highlighted.
- At the Select New Tap Location prompt, left-click a location on the highlighted trunk service line. A service line is drawn from the branch customer to that tap location.
This command can be executed by selecting the Create Branch Customer Tap item from the GDI Command List or by typing CREATEBRANCHCUST or CREATEBRANCH on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.
Notes
- A trunk customer service runs from the customer to a tap on a supply main; a branch service taps off of a trunk service instead, running in a straight line from the branch customer symbol to the tap point, and is assigned to the trunk customer’s supply main. Each trunk customer can have only one branch customer.
- The branch customer retains its original customer’s Internal ID Number.
- To enter a name for a new branch customer created from an existing customer, use the Add Branch Customer command. To change a customer’s data, use the Edit Customer Data command or left-click the customer feature.
- To move a branch service tap to a different trunk service, use the Move Branch Service Tap command. To remove a customer feature from the model, use the Delete Customer command.
Create A Symbol Legend
Creates a legend, in table form, of the User Graphic Symbols used in the model.
- Select the Create Symbol Legend item from the GDI Command List.
- At the Symbol Legend Location prompt, type a coordinate pair and press Enter. This sets the upper-left corner of the legend.
- At the Table Width prompt, type a value in the default Prompted Length Values units.
- At the Text Height prompt, type a value in the default Prompted Length Values units.
- At the User Graphic Symbol Size prompt, type a value in the default Prompted Length Values units.
- At the Number Of Columns prompt, type a value and press Enter. The Symbol Legend is created and displayed at the selected location.
This command can be executed by selecting the Create Symbol Legend item from the GDI Command List or by typing CREATESYMBOLLEGEND or CREATESYMLEG on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.
Notes
- A Symbol Legend is grouped like a User Table, so it is moved with the Move Group or Move User Table command and removed with the Delete Group or Delete User Table command.
Create A User Table
Creates and adds a User Table to the model.
- Select the Create User Table item from the GDI Command List.
- At the Table Title prompt, type a title and press Enter.
- At the Number Of Rows prompt, type a value and press Enter.
- At the Number Of Columns prompt, type a value and press Enter. The User Table Editor screen is displayed.
- Type the information into the data cells, edit as needed, then click Close.
- At the Select Location For Upper-Left Corner prompt, left-click a point in the GDI Display.
- At the Text Height prompt, type a value in the default Prompted Length Values units. The User Table is displayed at the selected location.
This command can be executed by selecting the Create User Table item from the GDI Command List or by typing CREATETABLE on the GDI Command Line and pressing Enter.
Notes
- User Tables are useful for printing model or item data alongside the system layout — for example, a bill of materials for a plan set.
- To change a User Table’s contents, use the Edit User Table command; to relocate it, use the Move User Table command; to duplicate it, use the Copy User Table command; to remove it, use the Delete User Table command.
Notes & Considerations
- Table Width, Text Height, User Graphic Symbol Size, and User Table Text Height are all entered in the default Prompted Length Values dimensional units, changeable on the Units data tab of the User Options & Settings screen.
- If the Allow Undo Of Data/Graphic Changes environment option is selected (Environment data tab, Options & Settings), click the Undo icon to restore the last data or graphic change.

FAQ
-
The pipe I clicked won’t accept a customer — why?A message is displayed when the selected pipe cannot have customers attached (for example, because of its type or settings). Click the OK command button to return to the prompt and select a different pipe.
-
How do I change a customer’s data or supply main after adding it?Left-click the customer to display its data in the Data Panel or use the Edit Customer Data command. Use Move Customer (or grips) to relocate it, Move Service Tap to slide the tap along the main, and Reassign Customer Supply Main to connect it to a different main.
-
How does automatic assignment decide which main to use?The auto-assign commands connect the object to the nearest main, but only mains whose Facility Type is “Active” are considered. The Active setting can be viewed on the Facility Settings screen — select the Facility Settings item from the Edit menu.
-
Can a main or service line follow a bent route instead of a straight line?
Yes. Use the Add Polyline Service command to place a tap location and then a series of vertices; the last vertex entered becomes the customer location. Type “U” on the GDI Prompt Line to undo the last segment while drawing. You can later add, move, or delete line vertices with the corresponding commands.
-
What is the difference between a trunk and a branch customer?A trunk customer’s service runs from the customer location to a tap on a supply main. A branch customer taps off of a trunk customer’s service line rather than a main, and is assigned to the supply main of its trunk customer. Each trunk customer can only have one branch customer.
