Finding Locations, Text & Crossings

GASWorkS provides a set of general-purpose find and locate commands that go beyond feature-specific searches — the Find Any Feature, Find DXF Text, Find A Geographic Location, Find Pipe Crossings, Find User Text, and Go To An XY Coordinate Location commands. These commands locate and flag features by data value, find text in DXF backgrounds and User Text annotations, locate geographic addresses using the GeoMapping functions, detect pipe crossings that may indicate missing connections, and reposition the model view at a specific coordinate location. Find flags placed by these commands remain displayed until they are cleared using one of the “Clear Flag” commands, and only one find flag per feature type can be displayed at a time.

GDI Commands

Find Any Feature

Finds and flags the location of a general feature — a customer, DXF Text, node, pipe, or User Text — based on a User input value.

This command can be executed by selecting the Find Any Feature item from the GDI Command List or by typing FIND on the GDI Command Line and pressing the Enter key.

Notes

• The find flags will remain displayed until they are cleared using one of the “Clear Flag” commands or another feature of the same type is flagged using a “Find” command. Only one find flag per feature type can be displayed at a time.
• If the Automatically Zoom On Find graphics option is selected, the view in the GDI Window will be centered on the flagged feature. To access the option, select the Options & Settings item from the Utilities menu, then select the Graphics data tab.

Find DXF Text

Finds and flags a DXF Text location based on a User input value.

This command can be executed by selecting the Find DXF Text item from the GDI Command List or by typing FINDDXFTEXT or FINDDXF on the GDI Command Line and pressing the Enter key.

Notes

• Only the first DXF Text feature that matches the search criteria will be flagged.
• The Find DXF Text routine is not case-sensitive. The search string must either match the entire DXF Text value (for example, to find “Main St,” the search string must be “Main St”), or type the term “LIKE” before the search value to allow partial matches to be found. For example, if “LIKE Main” is entered at the search prompt, the routine will flag a feature with the address “Main St” or “Main Rd.” If the entered search string is not found, a message may be displayed stating that no feature was found.
• Find flags will remain displayed until they are cleared using one of the “Clear Flag” commands or another feature of the same type is flagged using the Find DXF Text command. One find flag per feature type can be displayed at a time.

Find A Geographic Location

Finds and flags a geographic location based on a User-input street address or geographic location name.

This command can be executed by selecting the Find A Location item from the GeoMapping branch of the GDI Command Tree, by selecting the Find Geographic Location item from the GDI Command List, or by typing GEOFIND on the GDI Command Line and pressing the Enter key.

Notes

• For a GeoMapping location flag to be displayed, the GeoMapping functions must be enabled.
• A street address, geographic name, or place name can be used for the location name. The more specific or detailed the location description, the more precisely the GeoMapping location flag will be positioned. When entering a street address, include the zip code, postal code, city name, and state.
• Each map service may use a different physical location to define the same geographic location.
• Regional language and naming conventions may affect the map service’s ability to find a location. The Find Geographic Location command may not work as expected for international Users.
• If no location is found or the description is not understood, either a message may be displayed, or a GeoMapping location flag may be placed in a seemingly random location.
• When a location is found, the GDI Image is resized to center it at the current zoom scale.
• A GeoMapping location flag will remain displayed until it is cleared using the Clear GeoMapping Location Flag command.

Find Pipe Crossings

Finds locations where a pipe crosses another pipe without a node at the crossing location — a possible indication of a missing connection.

This command can be executed by selecting the Find Pipe Crossings item from the GDI Command List or by typing FINDCROSSINGS or FINDXNG on the GDI Command Line and pressing the Enter key.

Notes

• The Undo command cannot be used to restore crossing markers when using this command.
• The pipe crossing symbols/markers are assigned to a Facility Type named “Marked Pipe Crossings”. The display of the markers may be controlled using the Facility Settings item found in the Edit menu list.
• Individual markers may be manually deleted using the Delete User Graphic Symbol command, or all of the markers may be deleted using the Delete Pipe Crossing Markers command.

Find User Text

Finds and flags a User Text feature based on a User input value.

This command can be executed by selecting the Find User Text item from the User Text branch of the GDI Command Tree, by selecting the Find User Text item from the GDI Command List, or by typing FINDTEXT or FINDT on the GDI Command Line and pressing the Enter key.

Notes

• Only the first User Text feature that matches the search criteria will be flagged.
• The Find User Text routine is not case-sensitive. The search string must either match the entire text value (for example, to find “Main St,” the search string must be “Main St”), or type the term “LIKE” before the search value to allow partial matches to be found. Go To An XY Coordinate Location

Positions the upper-left corner of the model image at a User-specified XY-Coordinate location.

This command can be executed by selecting the Go To XY Location item from the GDI Command List or by typing GOTOXY or GOTO on the GDI Command Line and pressing the Enter key.

Notes

• To return to the last view, use the Zoom Previous command.

Notes & Considerations

• All of these commands assume that GASWorkS has been started, a model is open, and the GDI Window is displayed.
• To remove the flags placed by these commands, use the corresponding “Clear Flag” commands — see the Clearing Pipe, DXF & System Flags and Clearing Customer & Node Flags articles.
